Every project on this site is cause for celebration.

Could we take such care with our public spaces in Canada and fund artists to create such sensitive interactions?

I would like that kind of commission.

rainbows on ceiling

Daylight and sunlight are absorbed by color filters and reflective material that are subsequently projected onto an opal screen. These images are constantly changing in accordance with the position of the sun, the time of day and the season. In addition to these light spaces, Joost van Santen designed autonomous light sculptures. The design he made for the Verpleeghuis Leenderhof (nursing home) came into being through close collaboration with the architect, Hans Boots. Joost van Santen’s ‘light installation’ is spread out over the entire building in keeping with the building’s varying cubic volumes. In this way he transformed the hallway into a long illuminated street in which the light is absorbed from above by a screen attached to the ceiling. In contrast to these rather introverted images of the illuminated street is a second small opening in the roof that provides exuberant light. When the sun shines, bright spectrum colors appear on the elevator shaft creating interplay with the daylight, which, in turn, causes the reflections and the colored glass to resemble a moving ‘painting’. Sens Productions

The site-specific performances, installations and films directed by choreographer Noémie Lafrance explore human movements in man-made landscapes, creating a performance language that interacts with the environment and the audience. Each creation uses an existing indoors/outdoors public site or piece of urban architecture as the setting and inspiration for the performance. The choreography constructs narratives through the movement of people in their real surroundings.

The material is choreographed and rehearsed on site with the participation of large casts of performers and collaborating artists. The creation process pursues the intrinsic meaning of place for its historical, symbolic and energetic values and explores how places are marked by the “life” of people and objects and vice versa. The final product is imbued with the atmosphere of the space and reflects on the enhanced possibilities of live work performed outside of the black-box theater. Between stage and reality, the performance unfolds as an intimate and unpredictable voyage for traveling viewers.

I love this, rainbows, libraries and whimsy – and it’s a grad project by Valérie Madill a master’s student at my old Alma Matter.. Emily Carr University.

where is the magic
“Why is it then that the magic, mystery, adventure and knowledge is not sensed when entering a library? It is disgraceful that a library should be considered dull and stuffy. After observing Academic libraries, how they function, who uses them, how they are used, when they are used, what they look like, what expectations are, what frustrations are… I discovered many things, and decided the most notable design solution would be one applicable to all libraries, big, small, regardless of the physical shape and structure. In terms of library architecture, I came across some brilliant spaces, I even designed my own ultimate library in terms of placement, aesthetic and although I had some very important key factors established, I quickly realized the varying shape and infinite possibility of library architecture was part of the magic I did not want to lose.”

(Also note she built her site with Built with Indexhibit – lots of artists seem to like it).
